I’ve worked for BAT and been a member of the DB section of the Fund for 15 years. I would like to
reduce my working hours in the run up to retirement but, as this will reduce my salary, will it reduce
my overall pension?
Answer: Kevin Cooke
The pension you have earned over the last fifteen years will be unaffected by your change in working hours
and the related reduction in your salary. The Administrator will work out your full time equivalent salary for the
years you are working part time, for the purposes of calculating your Final Pensionable Salary. For example,
if you are working just 2.5 days a week on a salary of £15,000, your full time equivalent salary would be
£30,000. However, your Pensionable Service will reflect the hours you work and in this example, as you
would be working 2.5 days a week, you would accrue half a year’s pensionable service every year. This
means that your pension will only be affected for any period of part time service.

Contact us online for a speedy response
Instant access to information online means that people have the expectation of a more immediate response if they
have queries. So the Administrator’s service standards include faster response times for queries raised online than
over the phone.

• Via the website:
If you click on ‘contact us’ AFTER logging into the BAT UK
Pension Fund website the process will be even faster. Any questions you raise will automatically be logged in the
Administrator’s ‘worktray’ and will also be logged in your pension mailbox. This helps avoid the risk of your personal
information being accessed by others who may have access to your personal or work email account.

How do I register a change of address with the Pension Fund?
Answer: Chris Thorp
If you are employed by BAT, you will register your change of address on the employee self-service section of
the BAT intranet in the usual way and this will be forwarded to us to action.
If you are a deferred or pensioner member, the simplest way is to log into your account online to register your
change of address. Alternatively, you can send us a letter.
Any instructions via the website or post will be confirmed in writing back to your current postal address.
Member data is fundamental to the efficient running of the Fund but comprises extensive information that has
been built up over many years. The implications of poor quality data can include incorrect payments, higher
costs and problems with member communications. While there are a number of checks carried out by the Fund
administrators, auditors and other advisers, it is recognised that funds should go further in monitoring the quality
and robustness of data. Therefore, early in 2010, a periodic exercise was instituted to assess issues in the Fund’s
data, both DB and DC sections, using expertise in Capita Hartshead. However, there are some limits to what the
Trustee can achieve in this area and we need more help from members - we need to be kept informed of changes,
such as addresses, and we need members to respond to queries from the Fund. Better data will benefit members.
